You will need:
- Cardboard placemat template - Cotton canvas (white or natural) - Joint compound (check hardware store) - Acrylic paints (white and one other color) - Polyurethane (check hardware store) - Cardboard card approx. 5”x7”in. - Flat, hard work surface - Painter’s tape - Sponge brush - Fusible hem tape - Iron
1 .Pre-wash canvas. 2. Using template, mark out on canvas as many placemats as you need. Note: leave at least an inch between them. 3. Cut out place mats leaving a half inch for hem. 4. Following fusible tape instructions, hem edges of all placemats. 5. Secure a placemat to work surface with painter’s tape. 6. Center stencil on placemat and secure all edges with tape. 7. Use painter’s tape to cover any remaining canvas. 8. Spoon a few dollops of joint compound onto one end of stencil. 9. Use cardboard card to squeegee joint compound over stencil, leaving a thin layer in the stencil design. 10. Remove stencil and tape carefully and let dry overnight. 11. Seal placemat with a mixture of half polyurethane and half white acrylic paint. Let dry thoroughly. 12. Thin second acrylic paint color to make a wash. 13. Apply to placemat and immediately and gently wipe off, trying to reveal the design but leaving color in the spaces in between. 14. Seal with two more coats of polyurethane.
